Corn Story
In the July 2023 flood two of the culverts that bridge the Cookeville Brook washed out. Both lead to places in town where we are leasing land to grow crops or graze animals. The town road crew had the roads back in usable condition immediately and then received FEMA funds to replace them more permanently. We heard this winter that construction would most likely happen in the fall. We hedged our bet and decided to plant our sweet corn at our remote field on Johnson Road. Well, as luck would have it, things are actually ahead of schedule and the excavators arrived to begin replacing the culvert last week (photo above). Funny thing though - our sweet corn was also early and it too was ready to roll last week. Did I mention there is no alternate route to the other side of the culvert?
Jonathan and I always say that you have to have a plan B (and C and D). On Friday, Wendell strapped on his big frame backpack and hiked across the stream and through the woods. He came out with sweet corn! We will be hoofing it through the woods to get more this week so be sure to stop by while it lasts!
The list of farm-fresh goodness at the Cookeville Market gets longer every week! Fresh greens, radishes, green beans, farm grown cucumbers, broccolini, zucchini, summer squash, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, garlic, basil, new potatoes, fresh onions, blueberries and peaches!
And we always have treats from Marilyn, local cheese and our farm-raised meats, Chicken and beef are back in stock. So many reasons to come on down to the Cookeville Market!
Join us at the farm every summer Saturday with farm to table pizza, salads and desserts. This week we will have live music from Milton Busker and the Grim Works - The band plays a type of Americana they call “suit-folk”, defined as the people’s music, all dolled up for a night on the town. It is an Appalachian ditty played by Cole Porter. It’s a gospel song for heretics. It’s hippie music for people that can’t afford to drop out. It’s love songs for the kids who couldn’t get dates but still dress up for the dance.
Call the farm at the number below or email me with "Pizza Night" in the subject line.Pizza starts at 5pm and music at 6pm.
