Putting the COMMUNity In COMMUNication
Many of you know that the leadership of Vital Communities abruptly announced last week that they were going to shut down the beloved town-based list serves that have become part of the daily life here in the Upper and Upper Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire. These list serves were super important to the growth and success of our farm business and we are long time supporters of Vital Communities, largely because they stepped up to host these community resources when the hosting job got too big for the grass roots folks who were hosting them on their own.
The suggestion from Vital Communities was that we should all just join Front Porch Forum and move on. This suggestion made me contemplate what community means up here in the Upper, Upper Valley. I sent a note to the new Executive Director of Vital Communities trying to explain how the fact that Front Porch Forum will only allow someone to post and see posts from the town where they physically live was a huge issue up here. This is because what town one lives in is only one of many ways we define community up here. You might send your kids to school two towns over, belong to three different libraries, do community theater in one town and volunteer at the rope tow in another. Up here, communities are defined by our shared experiences, interests, values and needs. Not by some line on a map.
We were able to post on the LRN and other town list serves this week thanks to the tireless advocacy of current and former town mediators who got a temporary reprieve from Vital Communities and are working on an alterative hosting solution. Thanks guys.
