More than 10
It is a little surprising that farmers, especially farmers who grow vegetables, would get so excited about a holiday involving a woodchuck but we certainly do. We are not sure how this important winter milestone became linked with a lettuce stealing vermin . The ancient celts celebrated it as Imbolc, the beginning of the growing season and in Ireland it is St. Bridget’s day when shepherds make crosses to hang in the barn for a good lambing season. This is the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. We are not naive enough to believe that spring is six week away but we are starting to see signs. The lambs are starting to arrive on our farm. There is now more than 10 hours of daylight and the sun sets at almost exactly 5 pm. This is huge for folks who rely on sunlight to stimulate egg production, begin growing plants for spring planting and who work outside in all types of weather. The sun is shining today and it is noticeably stronger - the pigs are basking in it, the chickens are laying more eggs and the bags of potting soil for the first seeds of the year are warming up in front of the living room wood stove. A reminder that this super cold winter will, eventually, end. Something to celebrate for sure.
We have carrots, beets, parsnips, sweet potatoes, cabbages, garlic, potatoes, onions, local fresh greens, Long Wind Tomatoes, a full selection of our pastured meats, eggs, local milk, yogurt and cheeses and goodies galore from Marilyn's Kitchen.
On Saturday we will have fresh bread from Bright Sun Kitchen in Bradford. We will be back with our own wood-fired loaves when it warms up. Bright Sun makes a lovely loaf and we are excited to offer this local treat!
Friday Burger Night is BACK by popular demand! We will have our made-to-order Farm-Raised Burgers and smoked chicken wings for sale from 5:00-6:00 pm. We also have veggie burgers. Pick up dinner and head home after a long cold week!
We look forward to seeing everyone!
